“i thought it was a porn shop” said kelly as we passed west la’s a video store named desire and rightfully so. the aesthetic of the storefront is reminiscent of a 1988 toyota tercel. when you enter the tiny shop wedged between two restaurants on santa monica blvd., there are a only handful of sun-faded posters adorning the walls as decoration. the interior design isn’t sparse out of of laziness, but because there’s simply no room for frills amid the ceiling-high rows of dvds and vhs tapes.
the set-up at a video store named desire is simple: it’s like a walk-in redbox. all dvd rentals are $1.08 (sales tax). new releases can be kept for a day and older movies can be kept for a week. they have an insane catalog of dvds to choose from; the only time they’ve let me down was when i went with max and he was trying to cop a hugh hefner documentary.
in a world of streaming and downloading, it’s easy to think of a video store named desire as a relic. yet, as crackdowns on peer 2 peer file sharing heighten and recent acts taken by congress to curb such downloads (we’ve already been warned by time warner at our apartment) such stores become more appealing. especially, when everything costs a buck. yes, driving from downtown would kill you on gas alone, but if you are on the westside, a video sStore named desire is clutch. they’re open 12-12 every day.

it’s so easy to take things for granted in life. there are always things that could be better. i think where i suffer the most from such ungrateful thinking is in my career. there’s always a role you wanted but didn’t get or an agent that said you were too “green” or a big audition that falls through. there’s always something better. always.
the walker art center in minneapolis has been kind enough to ask us to perform on february 2nd, 2012!
